Tom Allan (minister)

Thomas (Tom) Allan (1916-1965) was a minister and evangelist of the Church of Scotland, broadcaster, author, columnist and pioneer of practical church outreach in social work, primarily in the city of Glasgow.〔 Article: 'Allan, Tom' by P.T. Bisset; Scott, H. et al., (11 vols., 1915-2000) ''Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae'', Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd (vols. 1-9); also Saint Andrew Press (vol. 10) summarizes Allan's career in the Church of Scotland in vol.9 p.284 and vol. 10 p.175.〕 His notable achievements were recognised with one of the city’s highest honours, the St Mungo Medal and Prize in 1964.〔The ''Glasgow Herald'' 12 December 1964, p.6: 'Tom Allan awarded St Mungo Medal - A Better Image for Glasgow'. Tom Allan always cherished his Ayrshire roots. Born in Newmilns,〔http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Birth Records Thomas Allan, Ayr, Newmilns, 1916〕 he benefited from the rich music and singing traditions of the valleys and participation in the life of the local church.
He also there met Jean Dunn from the same community and school. They were married in 1941.〔http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Marriage Records Allan/Dunn, Ayr, Newmilns, 1941〕
